An evening with Melbourne transport experts looking at how our city is still shaped by the 1969 Transportation Plan and where to from here.

About this Event

December 2019 marks 50 years since the adoption of the 1969 Melbourne Transportation Plan. 

This plan promised many things including a free-flowing network of new freeways and rail services every five minutes with no more than 20 per cent of passengers standing.

Yet not only does today’s reality find congestion and overcrowding throughout the metropolitan area on all transport modes, public debates about Melbourne’s development and public sector planning’s role in shaping this future has intensified, with new evidence and issues at stake: the negative environmental and social effects of car-based planning are now well-established along with humanity’s role in climate change.

In recognition of this milestone, RMIT will be hosting a special session of the ‘Talking Transport’ series of public presentations and panel discussions.

The event will feature speakers discussing the history, present challenges and the future outlook for transport planning in Melbourne.  ‘

Talking Transport’ was initiated in 2017 as a multi-university collaboration and this event is supported by staff from RMIT, Melbourne, Monash and Swinburne Universities.
